4.1 Employment Instability

In the Italian context and, more generally, in most European countries, employment instability is linked to the fixed-term nature of labor contracts, whereas in the US, given the lack of a proper labor contract and the “at will” nature of some employment relations, the latter are characterized by more extreme uncertainty. As explained in Chapter 2, mass fashion workers in New York have no guarantee about the weekly number of hours they will work, as they are paid hourly and there is not a minimum number of work hours defined by law, neither for part-timers nor for full-timers. In contrast to their US counterparts, once Italian workers are hired, they know how many hours they will work per week (until the contract ends, if it is not open-ended). The only exceptions are workers with zero-hours contracts and vouchers; they, however, are a small minority. I will analyze these two different dimensions of employment instability in the lived experiences of workers in the US and Italy, starting with the most radical situation.
